As a psychologist I work with people from all walks of life (and who have a whole host of different difficulties), and depression is by far the most common difficulty I come across. As with all mental health difficulties depression really doesn’t care whether you’re young, old, black, white, green, male, female … When your brain decides life is just too difficult it goes into shutdown mode and ‘bam’ every ounce of motivation you once had is gone. You’re not just a little bit down. You’re literally at rock bottom. It’s not that you can’t see a way out – your brain has firmly convinced you that there is no way out. That’s it. You’re depressed and now you’re stuck like this forever. Now, this is complete baloney (and you have my permission to get your internal monologue going and tell yourself this exact phrase ‘I am not suck, depression is something I am dealing with right now – not who I am’). Don’t worry I know you’ll need a bit more convincing. If you’re trapped in depression right now you aren’t going to believe me, or even yourself when you say you can get better. What to do when you have depression:
Now, you need to know that you should do both of these together – especially if you’ve completely isolated yourself from everyone you love. However, chances are you don’t have the motivation to talk to anyone right now and that’s OK. This is where the essential oils come in. This is where you give your brain a kick up the bum to get going, get motivated and get back to full health. Cheating your way out of depression.Like all the best things in life there is plenty of choice when it comes to supporting your mind out of depression. Which oil you choose depends completely on what you’re drawn to and your own genetic make-up. Remember – we’re all unique so have a sniff, have a play, and see what works for you. Antidepressant essential oils:All the following oils have antidepressant properties making them by far the best at combating your mental health funk:
I caution no more than every 2 hours (as this is how long it’s in your system for) because using too much can make you feel a bit off. Remember – less is more! Personally, I use either aromatic or topical application when I’m trying to lift my moods. If I’m working from home then having the oil going in a diffuser enables my room to smell great as well as help me feel great. If however, I’m out and about all day I’ll stick some on my pulse points (behind my ears and the back of my neck). But like everything – it’s completely up to you whether you use the oils aromatically (A), topically (T), or internally (I). A huge part of using essential oils to support your health is about giving you a choice. Empowering you to be responsible for your own decisions. Have a great Thursday.
